If you're the parent of a toddler in Kolkata, you've probably felt it already. The family WhatsApp group has started asking questions. A neighbour has "heard the forms are out." A cousin is sure the interviews have already started. And all of this is landing on you while the city is still busy with Puja.
Take a breath. It's a race to get your child into the nursery, but there are 3 things you need to know early; does your child meet the age requirements, what documents do you need and when do each of the schools open their forms? After doing all those the rest is much less stressful.
This guide helps you to navigate all three in simple terms, plus the questions "most parents would like to have asked sooner".
When does nursery admission in Kolkata happen?
The period for most private and ICSE schools in the city is from October to January for the next academic year. Here's a typical pattern:
- October: Forms become available, at the school office, online, or both
- November to December: Admission tests, child interactions and parent interviews
- December to January: Selection lists, confirmation and fee payment
Each school has its own dates; not every school advertises those dates. Some put up a notice on their website. Otherwise, just forms begin to be distributed at the office counter one morning. If you have a short list, contact each school this month to find out the following: When are the forms coming out and what is the deadline? It's a 2-minute call that can save you from missing a window that you didn't know you had.
Age criteria: is your child ready this year?
This is where most of the confusion starts, because Kolkata schools don't all use the same names for their first class. Depending on the school, it might be called Nursery, Pre-Nursery, Playgroup or LKG 1.
The name matters less than the age. In general, children entering the first year of a pre-primary programme are expected to be around three years old. As one example, the age chart on Nopany High's admission process page looks like this:
|
Class |
Age at admission |
|
LKG 1 |
3+ years |
|
LKG 2 |
4+ years |
|
UKG |
5+ years |
|
Class 1 |
6+ years |
One thing parents often miss: "3+" always comes with a cut-off date. A child born in the later months of the year can fall on either side of it, depending on how the school counts. Before you fill in any form, ask the school directly, "3+ as of which date?" It's a simple question, and the answer decides which class your child applies for.
It also helps to understand where these early years fit. Under NEP 2020, the foundational stage covers the first years of school, from pre-primary through Class II. These years focus on play, language, curiosity and confidence rather than heavy academics. You can see how one ICSE school describes its approach to this stage on its Foundation Stage page.
Documents you'll need
Requirements vary slightly from school to school, but most will ask for some version of the list below. Collecting these now, before forms open, saves a lot of last-minute running around.
- Birth certificate: Usually an attested photocopy of the birth certificate issued by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (or the relevant municipality). Keep the original handy for verification.
- Passport-size photographs of your child: Recent ones, and more than you think you need. Many forms ask for one pasted on the form and extras attached.
- Parents' details: Names, educational qualifications, profession, office address and contact numbers. Some forms also ask about income, so keep that ready.
- Address details: Both permanent and current residential address. Many schools also ask for address proof.
- Identity documents: Some schools ask for the child's or parents' Aadhaar. Check each school's list.
- Transfer certificate: Usually needed only if your child is moving from another school. Ask whether a certificate from a playschool is required.
A simple tip from parents who've been through it: make one folder for admissions. Keep the originals, four or five photocopies of each document, and a set of scanned copies on your phone for online forms.
What actually happens after you submit the form?
The word "interview" makes many parents nervous, especially when the child is only three. In practice, at the nursery level it's usually a short, informal interaction. A teacher might chat with your child, show them colours or picture cards, or simply watch how comfortable they are in a new room.
Schools aren't testing knowledge at this age. They're looking at readiness. Can the child separate from a parent for a few minutes? Do they respond when spoken to? Are they curious?
There may also be a conversation with the parents. Expect questions about your child's routine, how they spend their day, and why you're considering the school. Answer honestly. There's no "right" answer, and schools can usually tell when a child has been coached to recite.
Each school runs this stage differently, so it's worth asking the admission office what the test or interaction involves for the youngest age group.

Questions worth asking before you confirm a seat
Once you're shortlisted, it's tempting to say yes immediately. Pause for a moment and ask a few practical questions first:
- What is the class size for pre-primary, and how many teachers or helpers are in each room?
- What does a normal school day look like? Timings, snack breaks, rest time and outdoor play.
- What are the toilet-training expectations? This matters a lot at age three.
- How is the fee structured? Ask about one-time charges, annual charges and monthly fees separately. Many schools publish this, like this fee structure page.
- How will my child get to school? Ask about the school bus, carpool options and pick-up rules.
- Does the school continue up to Class XII? A school that runs from Nursery to Class XII means your child won't need to change schools mid-way. If you're still weighing boards, our comparison of ICSE vs CBSE vs State Board may help.
